Dear Chlorine

Dear Chlorine,

Just so you know, I am writing this when you are 1.5 years old (555 days to be exact). By the time you’re able to read this, you’ll have probably known that I like playing video games and I like playing them with friends, brothers, your mother, and most probably even you. I like sharing gaming experiences, and I actually enjoy playing games while someone is watching (ask Mommy how many times I forced her to watch me play). A lot of times these experiences get posted to Facebook, or Twitter, or Google+. By the time you’re reading this, though, Social Networking might have become obsolete (who knows?). And besides, they’re too cluttered with other posts such as check-ins, vacation photos, and many more.

So I decided to compile these gaming experiences into one blog, so that one day I get to share them with you, and so that as I play these games right now while you’re still a baby, I can play them as if I’m already showing them to a grown-up you.

In fact, I’ve taken the liberty to give you a temporary gaming nickname – Chlorine. Feel free to change it when you’re old enough.

Love,
Daddy

Guild Wars 2 Super Adventure Box Bauble Farming (VIDEO)

Dear Chlorine,

More than a week ago I posted about an upcoming Guild Wars 2 patch that brings back the old Super Adventure Box, which came out last April 2013. I discussed a lot of the features and told you why it was one of my most anticipated patches. In case you forgot, read about it
here.

The patch itself did not disappoint. The introduction of ascended weapons rocked the market, and the new Legendary effects gave my Thief all-new footfalls from my Legendary bow.

The center of attraction, of course, was the return of the well-loved Super Adventure Box. Before anything else, let me tell you a little about this mini-game.

Super Adventure Box (SAB) is a retro-themed platforming mini-game. By retro, I of course mean it has references to games in the 80s and 90s, in particular, it is heavily influenced by the original Legend of Zelda, which is ironically not a platformer.

The mini-game consists of jumping from one platform to another, killing enemies, and uncovering secret rooms. At the end of each zone is a boss which you have to defeat to get to the zone chest.

During this adventure, you collect Baubles, which are used to upgrade your character’s weapon skills or as ammunitions, and Bauble Bubbles (a reference to another platformer, Bubble Bobble), a currency used to purchase retro-themed weapon skins, among others. You can also convert 250 Baubles into 1 Bauble Bubble.

The weapon skins look out-of-place, actually, but are very cool nevertheless. Other things you can buy with this currency are Continue Coins (for use inside SAB if you run out of lives), a Mini, Obsidian Shards, Crystals, and Philosopher’s Stones.

Each weapon skin costs 5g plus 50 Bauble Bubbles, so it goes without saying that you’ll need a LOT of Baubles if you want to buy a skin or two, more so if you need the other things I mentioned. Because of this, several farming routes/guides have come out when this mini-game launched back in April.

Unfortunately to newer GW2 players, and to those who didn’t actively participate on SAB’s first iteration, like your Daddy, most farming guides no longer work, in particular, because most of the Dig Spots no longer give Baubles.

Because of this I decided to make my own farming route, and so that I can show you a little bit about SAB, I decided to record it. There are key things you need to know first and foremost:

1. This is not new content. This is the first stage (zone) of the first world, the same stage that came out last April.

2. For some reason my PC was slowing down while recording, so I was being extra careful in this video. This means the video is a bit “choppy” (low fps), but also means that its 3-minute length can be misleading. One can do this route so much faster. However…

3. There is a cutscene at the start which I decided not to include in this video. It lasts around 30 seconds and you can’t skip it. So even if you perform the path faster, because of the cutscene, the entire route might still take about 3 minutes.

Without further ado, here’s the video:

By the way, this route gives you at least 53 Baubles, minus the 3 Baubles you used as Bombs, for a total of 50 Baubles per 3 minutes. Not as fast as the older guides, but at least this one still works.
